The book was first published in 1947 ; this new paperback edtion makes it accessible to the widest possible audience. In 1938 on the eve of the Holocaust, Roman Vishniac traveled from the Baltic Sea to the Carpathian Mountains, photographining the Jewish communities of Eastern Europe. From a wealth of material - over 2,000 photographs in all - 31 were selected for this book. The photos depict the pious and their books, children studying, merchants with the barest of goods. Together they make up one great portrait of Jewish life in the shtetl: a life abjectly poor materially but rich spiritually. [Schocken Books, 1989]
